The age of majority is the legally defined age at which a person is considered an adult, with all the attendant rights and responsibilities of adulthood. On your waiver a Minor is considered a participant that is under the age of majority. All minors listed on your waiver will need to enter their date of birth to show that they are in fact a minor.
This also allows the current waiver on which they are listed to expire when they reach age of majority and become an Adult.
(Within the Smartwaiver system, once a Minor reaches the legal Age of Majority set within your form, their Minor waiver will be marked as expired within your dashboard. If they return to your business at a future date, they would need to fill out an Adult waiver once they are considered to be of legal adult status.)
The age of majority is defined by country and state laws, which will vary. It's a good idea to consult with your legal advisor or insurance company if you are unsure of your state's age of majority.
To adjust the age of majority on your waiver:
1. Select Create / Edit Waivers and choose the waiver you'd like to edit.
2. Click on the Minors tab and adjust the 'Age of Majority' dropdown to your needed standards.
(The default Age of Majority on all new waiver forms is set to 18 years of age)
3. When you're done making changes, click the green 'Publish Waiver' button in the upper righthand corner to re-publish your form.
And you're all set!
Keep in mind... Whenever a new waiver is created, the legal age of majority is set to 18 years old by default - so make sure you adjust this setting accordingly if you recognize different ages of majority for any different forms / activities.
As mentioned, we recommend consulting with your legal advisor or insurance company if you're unsure of your state or region's age of majority.
What a signing participant sees:
If a participant does not meet the legal age of majority on your form, the person filling out the form will see a prompt that informs them 'Only adults can complete this agreement.' (Shown below)
Any participant who does not meet the legal age of majority will be unable to submit the form if you do not allow that age group.
